Our Story
A tale of tradition, craftsmanship, and the pursuit of perfection that spans over 175 years in the Scottish Borders.
The Beginning
In 1847, master distiller Hamish MacLeod established GlenTarras in a secluded glen of the Scottish Borders. Drawn by the pure spring water and ideal climate, he built what would become one of Scotland's most respected whisky houses.
The name "GlenTarras" comes from the Gaelic "gleann tarbh-eas," meaning "valley of the bull waterfall," referring to the powerful cascade that provides our facilities with its life-giving water.

The Visionary
Hamish MacLeod was more than a distiller; he was an artist who understood that great whisky required patience, precision, and an unwavering commitment to quality. His philosophy of "never compromise, never rush" remains at the heart of everything we do.
"The land gives us the water, the grain, and the time. Our job is simply to listen and let nature guide our hands."
